Elise Gwilym

Psychotherapist/Cwnselydd MSc MBACP Music Therapist Dip.MT/Therapydd Cerdd

I specialise in anxiety, relationship issues and couple counselling. Are you going round in anxiety loops? Do you have negative thoughts and feelings that you would like to deal with better? I offer a free initial 30m session to assess your type of anxiety and issues in order to then:

  • Deconstruct - to unpack your stuff

  • De-attach - to look at your sense of safety, self-worth and significance

  • Dynamise -  to empower you with skills

I am an ACT skills specialist (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), having created an effective and successful ACT online course. We know that CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) has plateaued on a 50% success rate some10 years ago. The World Health Organisation now recommends ACT skills for anxiety, trauma, stress and addictions, as evidence-based research shows up to 86% improvement in every person - as I have seen many times in my clients.

Should you want support through an ongoing difficult period of your life, having been through the pain of divorce and the hard but rewarding work of remarriage to the same person qualifies me to walk with you on your own unique journey in a way that only experience could teach me.

As a Psychotherapist/Counsellor and previous Music Therapist where I worked in an NHS team of Clinical Psychologists for14 years with young adults/children on the Autistic Spectrum and their families, I offer a sensitive and experienced ear to really hear you.

I help you apply tried and tested elements of different approaches that will work in combination for you. I utilise elements of Transactional Analysis that look at relationship dynamics, Person-Centered counselling that looks at you as an unique individual, and a Psychodynamic approach of looking at the past to include Attachment Theory of how we relate to our parents or care-givers and how we may carry those patterns still.

I offer counselling via phone, virtually, or face-to-face in Caernarfon, North Wales. Sessions are £40 individual and £60 for couple counselling. Dw i yn cwnsela yn y Gymraeg, gweler y tudalennau Cymraeg o.g.y.d. sydd ar waith ar hyn o bryd.

My approach

I offer 50m of integrative talking therapy in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Integrative means that I will use elements of whichever approach I have that is most effective for you. Counselling need not be a long process to be effective but everyone needs to go at their own pace. Six to twelve weeks is usually the norm to see results in your life, but everyone is different. There are no quick fixes, however, I work in a very effective way as I combine exploring the issues in your life to see where their roots lie, with showing you the skills needed to deal with your particular thought processes in the here-and-now.

During my MSc studies I worked in placement at the NHS Primary Care Mental Health Counselling Service and for the North Wales Women's Centre (NWWC) in Rhyl doing face-to-face work there. I trained with CRUSE doing bereavement and grief counselling. I still work for the NWWC as well as doing private counselling and writing and running online ACT courses for anxiety.
